Initiative 2 · the scaled model

Persona library
36 students, one instrument each

The scaled study moves from three personas to a library. Every test is one persona, one campus, one task. A tester (human or AI) opens the tool and is told: this is who you are, these are your barriers, this is the one thing you are trying to do, at this campus. Then they attempt it from a real felt need. Problems, not destinations: the persona has to figure out where to go. The library below reflects who actually enrolls across the ten colleges, ESL and non-native speakers, veterans, autistic and ADHD students, food-insecure and first-generation students, working parents, returning adults, students who need Disability Resources, swirling multi-campus students, dual-enrollment high-schoolers, and more.

36research personas
10colleges in scope
1+1+1persona · campus · task per test
9home languages represented
500target persona+task scenarios
Personas are research instruments, not real people.
No PII. Each persona is a designed-in set of barriers that makes a specific failure visible. They are validated against real student input (design-studio students and the Student AI Group), and they map to no-PII test accounts. The point of the library is variety: a page that works for a digitally fluent transfer student can still fail a phone-first, Spanish-dominant parent on a slow connection, and only a varied library surfaces that.

Generate a fresh persona on demand So every test gets a slightly different student

For large unmoderated runs, a tester does not have to reuse a fixed persona. A fresh persona is generated by combining attribute pools, so each run probes a different intersection of barriers. The method is simple and repeatable, and it keeps the no-PII rule intact because nothing here is a real person.

Step 1 · draw attributes
  • Age band: 17 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 34, 35 to 49, 50+
  • Status: first-gen, returning adult, veteran, international (F-1), DACA/Dreamer, dual-enrollment, foster-alumna, reentry
  • Home language: English, Spanish, Arabic, Somali, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, other
  • Access need: DRS, autistic, ADHD, low-bandwidth, phone-only, after-hours-only
  • Life pressure: food-insecure, housing-insecure, working parent, caregiver, full-time job
Step 2 · set the goal
  • Pick one goal that fits the draw (enroll, pay, plan, set up, fix, find support, transfer, graduate, swirl)
  • Pick one base task from the taxonomy that serves that goal
  • Assign one campus from the ten
Step 3 · write the brief
  • One paragraph: who you are, your barriers, the one thing you want, the campus
  • No destination named. The tester must find the path
  • Record the run in the capture form against a new Scenario ID

A short generator prompt can produce these briefs in batches for AI testers, drawing one value from each pool above. The fixed library below is the validated core; the generator extends it for breadth.

The library 36 personas · the first three are the original validated set

Marisol Reyes, Darnell Carter, and Alex Nguyen are the three personas already developed and carried forward unchanged. The rest extend the library to cover the demographics the original three could not.
