Interview Practice 5: Company Research

This assignment measures Module Objective 5.4, which supports Course Competency 7.

Objectives

Overview

Arriving at an interview without researching the organization is one of the most common and most avoidable mistakes. This fifth exercise in the interview practice series applies a research routine and turns it into a recorded answer.

5 points, Exercises. About 1.5 hours.

Instructions

  1. Watch Interview Prep Series, Part I: Conducting Research for the Interview (YouTube).
  2. Use the organization from your cover letter, or another one you are targeting. Spend 20 to 30 minutes on its website, recent news, social media, clients or portfolio, and employee reviews. Record three specific facts with their sources.
  3. Record a 60 to 90 second answer to “Why do you want to work for us?” that cites all three facts. Assume your skills have already been discussed.

Example

Weak: “I have always loved animation and your company makes great work.” Strong: “Your recent series used a hybrid 2D and 3D pipeline, and your animation supervisor described it in an interview this spring. That technical approach is the environment I want to work in.”

Accessibility

Caption your video. Start with automatic captions (YouTube Studio Subtitles, Premiere Pro Speech to Text, Google Vids or Meet), then read every line and correct names, software terms and timing by hand. Automatic captions alone do not meet the requirement.

Submission

Submit the organization, job title, your three facts with sources, and the link to your recording. Record with OBS Studio or any recorder you set up in Technology Setup. Upload the video to YouTube with your Maricopa account as Unlisted, or to Google Drive shared with Maricopa, and submit the link. If your account cannot upload to YouTube (some accounts for students under 18 cannot), use Google Drive and add your corrected caption file under Manage caption tracks.
