Copyright for Digital Media Artists
This assignment measures Module Objective 3.5, which supports Course Competency 6.
Objectives
- 3.5 Identify who owns client work, which fair use factor a court weighed, and what a Creative Commons license allows. (Course Competency 6)
Overview
Every freelance job and every portfolio piece raises copyright questions: who owns the work, what you may borrow, and what happens when AI is involved. You answer four questions from primary sources, applied to your own work. This is general information for designers, not legal advice.
10 points, Exercises. About 2 hours.
Instructions
- Read the U.S. Copyright Office Fair Use Index, Creative Commons: About CC Licenses and U.S. Copyright Office: Copyright and Artificial Intelligence.
- Ownership. Write the ownership clause you will use in your Project Brief with a Contract in Module 5, in your own words, and explain in three or four sentences who owns a logo you design for a client with and without that clause.
- Fair use. Find a case in the Fair Use Index from your own medium (illustration, photography, film or video, music, games or design). Name the case and identify the fair use factor the court weighed most, in four to six sentences.
- Licensing. Choose one Creative Commons license for a named piece of your own portfolio work. Identify what it lets others do and what it does not, and why you chose it.
- AI. Using the Copyright Office AI page, identify whether an image generated entirely by AI can be copyrighted, and what that means for a client who asks you to use AI imagery.
- Cite the source for each answer with a link.
Accessibility
Use a real heading for each of the four questions, and write every link as descriptive text (the name of the page, never “click here”).
Submission
Submit your four answers in the text box or as a Google Doc link shared with Maricopa.
