Personal Goals Statement
This assignment measures Module Objective 2.1, which supports Course Competency 1.
Objectives
- 2.1 Evaluate your career goals against three real postings or opportunities in your field, and describe your target job by industry, type of organization and typical workday. (Course Competency 1)
Overview
Designers write a brief before they start a project. This is the brief for your own career: where you want to go in two and five years, and who you are targeting. Every later assignment builds from it, and your instructor and your career agent in Module 9 both read it.
10 points, Exercises. About 2.5 hours.
Instructions
- Find two or three organizations you would like to work for (studios, agencies, companies, galleries or clients). Note what they make and what skills their postings list.
- Write about 250 words: where you see yourself in two years and in five years; whether you are targeting a staff job, freelance clients, transfer or a combination; and who the audience for your portfolio is.
- Record a 90-second video that explains your goals with two real job postings or opportunities on screen. Say what each posting asks for that you already have, and one thing you do not have yet.
- Gemini may help you organize your notes or check your grammar. Record any use in an AI-use log row. The goals, the examples and the recording are yours.
Example
Weak: “I want a job in animation after I graduate and to work on interesting projects.” Strong: “Within two years I want a junior motion graphics position at a production company that makes title sequences and broadcast graphics. Within five years I want to lead a small motion team. I am targeting Phoenix companies first and open to remote work.”
Accessibility
Make the document readable by a screen reader: use real heading styles (Heading 1 and Heading 2 in Google Docs or Word, paragraph styles in InDesign), keep text contrast high, add alt text to every image or logo, and export a tagged PDF (InDesign: Create Tagged PDF; Word or Google Docs: keep document structure tags on when you save as PDF). Caption your video. Start with automatic captions (YouTube Studio Subtitles, Premiere Pro Speech to Text, Google Vids or Meet), then read every line and correct names, software terms and timing by hand. Automatic captions alone do not meet the requirement.
Submission
Submit a PDF of your statement, the link to your recording (unlisted YouTube or Google Drive), and your AI-use log row. Classmates do not see this assignment. Record with OBS Studio or any recorder you set up in Technology Setup. Upload the video to YouTube with your Maricopa account as Unlisted, or to Google Drive shared with Maricopa, and submit the link. If your account cannot upload to YouTube (some accounts for students under 18 cannot), use Google Drive and add your corrected caption file under Manage caption tracks.
