Interview Practice 1: Question Types

This assignment measures Module Objective 2.5, which supports Course Competency 7.

Objectives

Overview

Interviews follow patterns. This first exercise in the interview practice series introduces the main question types and the opener almost every interview uses: “Tell me about yourself.” That answer is about your professional experience and fit for the job, not your personal life.

5 points, Exercises. About 1.25 hours.

Instructions

  1. Watch Interview Prep Series, Part II: Interview Question Types (YouTube). Captions are available.
  2. Classify these five questions as behavioral, situational or competency-based, in one line each: (1) Tell me about a time you missed a deadline. (2) What would you do if a client rejected all three concepts? (3) Walk me through how you prepare files for print. (4) Describe a time you received difficult feedback. (5) How would you handle two art directors giving you conflicting notes?
  3. Choose a posting from the Industry Job Posting discussion. Record a 60-second answer to “Tell me about yourself and why you are a good fit for this position,” as if you have graduated and are applying for that role.

Example

A weak answer starts with “I was born in” or “I am currently a student.” A strong answer: “I am a motion graphics designer focused on broadcast and commercial work. I work in After Effects and Cinema 4D and have built a portfolio of title sequences and product animations. Your work on regional sports packages is the kind of work I want to do.”

Accessibility

Caption your video. Start with automatic captions (YouTube Studio Subtitles, Premiere Pro Speech to Text, Google Vids or Meet), then read every line and correct names, software terms and timing by hand. Automatic captions alone do not meet the requirement.

Submission

Submit your five classifications in the text box and the link to your 60-second recording. Record with OBS Studio or any recorder you set up in Technology Setup. Upload the video to YouTube with your Maricopa account as Unlisted, or to Google Drive shared with Maricopa, and submit the link. If your account cannot upload to YouTube (some accounts for students under 18 cannot), use Google Drive and add your corrected caption file under Manage caption tracks.
