Discussion: AI Resume Experiment

This assignment measures Module Objective 2.6, which supports Course Competency 2.

Objectives

Overview

AI writing tools are part of the professional toolkit. Knowing how to use them well, and when not to, is a professional skill. In this discussion you ask Gemini to improve one section of your resume and judge what it did.

5 points, Exercises. About 1.5 hours.

Discussion Prompt

Use Gemini to edit one section of your resume, then tell the class where it helped and where it misrepresented you.

Instructions

  1. Read Using AI to Craft the Perfect Resume (Dice).
  2. Remove your phone number, email and street address before you paste anything into Gemini.
  3. Open Gemini with your Maricopa account. Paste one challenging section of your resume and a posting you are targeting, and ask Gemini to strengthen the action verbs and match the wording to the posting.
  4. Compare your original with Gemini’s version side by side.
  5. Write a reflection of five to eight sentences: two ways the edit improved the section, two ways it misrepresented you (an overstated role, a lost detail, a voice that is not yours), and what you will keep. Include screenshots of your original and the edited version.
  6. Submit your reflection and both screenshots in Canvas. Your resume stays in Canvas only; do not post it to Discord.

Example

“Gemini replaced passive phrasing with stronger verbs, which helped. It also made me sound as if I led a team of twelve when I was one of four designers, and it dropped the software I used. I kept about half of its wording and rewrote the rest.”

Submission

Submit your reflection and both screenshots in Canvas.
