The cumulative project that ends AVC 100. Students take the postcard they already designed and set it in motion, a short vertical animation of the kind that lives on an Instagram or TikTok story, then post it to the portfolio they carry into every course after this one.

Goal

Give every student a finished, portfolio-ready piece that proves motion design is within reach, while consolidating the skills the course spent all term building. The project is deliberately the last thing students make: it reuses their own postcard art rather than starting from a blank canvas, so the cognitive load falls on the new skill, motion, rather than on inventing content from scratch.

Audience

Students finishing a one-credit, half-semester on-ramp course, many of them new to college and taking the only art class they will ever take. None had used After Effects before, and very few had touched any Adobe software or made computer art at all. That is what makes the finished pieces matter: in an After Effects course they would look elementary, but here they are students who arrived with no digital tools and, in seven weeks, learned to design an image, cut their subject out of its background, and set the whole thing in motion. The design assumes no prior experience and never lets the software become the reason a student stops.

Each objective is written as an observable action, and each is evidenced by a graded artifact, the storyboard, the exported animation, and the logged peer critique, so every outcome the project claims is tied to something the rubric measures.

Process

The project is backward-designed from a single outcome, a student can plan and produce a short animation of their own work, and scaffolded in two graded steps so the plan is critiqued before any building begins.

Step one is a storyboard. Before opening the software, students sketch four to six frames showing how each piece moves, mark entrance directions with arrows, and note the order and timing. Planning the motion on paper first separates the design decision from the software mechanics, so a student is not fighting the tool and the idea at the same time. The storyboard is assembled on a Miro board and posted for peer critique two days before the deadline.

Step two is the build. Students import the layered postcard into After Effects and animate it with position and scale keyframes, previewing, trimming to remove dead time, and exporting an MP4. The instruction sequence is broken into small, checkable moves so that a student who has never keyframed anything can follow a clear path to a working export. Because the art already exists, the whole of their attention goes to the one genuinely new concept, keyframed motion over time.

Both steps close on the same critique loop the course uses throughout: post your work early, give feedback to at least four classmates, log the feedback you gave, and submit the final board. Critique is not an add-on at the end; it is the structure that builds the peer community the persistence research says keeps students enrolled.

Alignment

Every deliverable maps to a point-weighted rubric so students see exactly what the work is measured against and why. The storyboard rubric rewards evidence of planning, the frames, the direction arrows, the timing note, alongside the peer critique. The build rubric rewards technical execution, layers separated on import, motion that reads, type and palette carried over from the postcard, alongside the same critique loop. Points sit on the planning and the community, not only on the finished file, so the process the course is teaching is the process that gets graded.

Student work

Two finished pieces from the course, shared with each student’s permission. Both began as a postcard the student designed earlier in the term and ended as an exported animation posted for peer critique.

Outcomes

Students leave with a shareable animation and, more to the point, with a portfolio that now holds motion work most did not believe they could make at the start of a one-credit course. The project reliably produces the two signals the redesign was built to move: original work students are proud of, and the stated intent to take another course that uses the software. In the end-of-course survey, the measures tied to this project, having made something real in each program and being proud of the work, both landed at 4.7 out of 5.
