The Traveler

Goal

Give students authentic, end-to-end publishing experience: soliciting and editing work, designing and setting type, and shipping a finished, printed piece for their portfolio.

The Traveler is a community college’s student literary and arts magazine, a real annual publication of student writing, art, and photography, produced entirely by students.

Audience

The campus community and the students who make it. It is a genuine publication with a real audience. Back issues live in the Glendale Community College library archive, and are preserved in the Arizona state library’s digital archive through the Arizona Memory Project.

Process

It is student-run from submission to press, guided by faculty advising, across Volumes 44 through 58: students solicit and select the work, edit it, design and set the type, and take a finished piece to print.

Technology

• Adobe InDesign for layout and typesetting, Photoshop for preparing art and photography, produced as a printed annual.
• A full student editorial pipeline: soliciting, selecting, and editing submissions of writing, art, and photography, then designing to press.
• Back issues archived in the college library and preserved in the Arizona Memory Project, the Arizona State Library’s digital archive.

Outcomes

A multiple Pinnacle Award winner from the College Media Association, national recognition for excellence in student publications, sustained across Volumes 44 to 58. Every volume ships a real printed piece students can carry into a portfolio, and their work is preserved in a state archive: an authentic audience and a permanent record, not an assignment that ends at a grade.

Status

Ongoing. A live annual publication advised across Volumes 44 to 58, with a standing student editorial process, sustained national recognition, and a permanent place in a state archive. Each cycle is a new cohort taking a real magazine to press.
