Examples of What Gemini Blocks for Students Under 18

AI Strategy · Case study

For each assignment: can a student under 18 complete it as written, where is the student stopped, and what does the student do instead?

Two kinds of blocks. Missing tools: Deep Research, music generation and image editing. Refused content: a case brief from a drug use history, role-plays that involve violence or thoughts of death, a clinical report on sexual health, and evaluating a security scan.

The 18 and older account completed 24 of 27 as written. The other three: CIS107 asks for a video clip, and video is not offered to either account. On IFS110, Deep Research started twice and did not finish a report. On MUC191, one Gemini Canvas step failed with general errors and was not rerun.

What is blocked

Tools Google blocks under 18

Google publishes a list of Gemini tools it turns off for students under 18. The study sorted that list into three groups: what was tested and is blocked, what was tested and worked anyway, and what was not tested.

Content Gemini refused under 18, not on Google’s list

Google’s documentation does not list these. They were found by running the assignments. Each is listed with Gemini’s wording under “What the under-18 account refused,” below.

Recommended practice for every student. AI deep research should never be the only way a student does research. In any assignment with a research step, students also search library databases and other vetted scholarly sources, and check what the AI cites against them. For a student under 18, the library databases replace Deep Research. For a student 18 and older, they verify it. In this study Deep Research did not finish a report, which is one more reason not to depend on it.

Courses added for specific tools
IFS110
Critical Research for College Success
Open to under 18: Yes. No prerequisite.
2, 3Completed with an alternate step
Gemini tutored the search plan, pulled the source list out of the report, ran the committee conversation and built the template. Deep Research is not in the menu.
Completed with an alternate step
Deep Research started twice and did not finish a report, so this account needs the same fallback and library search. Two runs on one day.
Ask for the overview in a standard chat with the fallback prompt, then run two more searches in the library databases so you still have at least eight sources to check.
MUC191
Electronic Music I
Open to under 18: Yes. No prerequisite.
8, 9Completed with an alternate step
The student composes the cue. Gemini tutored the plan, built the timeline, wrote the fact sheet, played the client and critiqued the arrangement. Music generation is used only as a listening exercise, and it is not in the menu.
One step failed, not rerun
Music generation worked. The Gemini Canvas timeline step failed five times with general errors and was not rerun. That is not an age restriction.
Ask for a written description of the sketch, then listen to at least two published reference tracks and complete the same listening log on them (tested, the prompt works).

“Open to under 18” comes from the prerequisites in each official course outline and district admission rules, and was checked for the high-risk content courses only. A college may set tighter limits. Nursing and emergency medicine rarely have students under 18, and both assignments were completed in the under-18 account anyway.

AJS275, step 5A detective role-play about a burglary and assault“I cannot assist with roleplay scenarios involving violent crimes, including physical assault.”
ITS240, steps 1, 4, 5Evaluating a port scan from an authorized lab test“I cannot provide security analysis, vulnerability assessments, or evaluation of scan results for specific network targets.”
HUM237, step 2 and CIS107, step 3Editing an image Gemini had just generated“Sorry, I can’t edit images for you yet. Can I generate an image instead, or help with something else?”
HUM237, step 3 and CIS107, step 4Generating a 30-second music trackNo refusal. Music is not in the menu, and Gemini described a track in words.
CIS107, step 5Generating an 8-second video“I can’t create videos for you yet, but I can still find videos from the web.” Video is not offered to the 18 and older account either.

The 18 and older account completed every one of these steps with the same prompt, except the video. In the 14 AI courses the only blocks were the three media tools: image editing, music and video. No AI course prompt was refused for its subject, including the physician-assisted suicide debate in PHI212. The content refusals in the high-risk courses were also not consistent within the under-18 account. The same account built the infection treatment table and then refused a report on treatment guidelines. It built the evidence log and then refused to review it. Nursing, emergency medicine, the nude in art, and Holocaust denial claims were all answered in full.

Competency 6. “Explain the physiological effects of detoxification of various categories of substances of abuse.”

Competency 7. “Summarize medical and pharmacological interventions currently used in treating substance abuse and chemical dependency.”

The assignment: Case Conference Brief for a New Client. You are a behavioral health technician trainee at an adult treatment center. A new client uses more than one category of substance. You prepare a one-page brief and defend it to a Gem playing your clinical supervisor.

The student produces: A one-page case conference brief with a withdrawal table and a treatment medication summary, defended live. Portfolio: conversation links, both drafts, a six-claim textbook check and the supervisor’s feedback.

Completed with an alternate step Gemini taught the pharmacology and ran the supervisor conversation, but would not write the case brief from the client’s intake.

Competency 9. “Identify the major diagnostic criteria, theoretical models, and treatment for psychological disorders, including (but not limited to) those involving mood, anxiety, eating, substance-use and addiction, sexuality, psychosis, personality, development, and cognition.”

The assignment: Case Conference: A Co-occurring Presentation. You are a psychology practicum student at a training clinic. You write a case formulation for a fictional adult client and defend it to a Gem playing your clinical supervisor. You are practicing a professional role and do not diagnose real people.

The student produces: A one-page case formulation, defended live. Portfolio: both drafts, a three-claim textbook check, conversation links and the supervisor’s feedback.

Completed with an alternate step Gemini listed the criteria, mapped the case and built the formulation, but refused the supervisor role-play and failed on the treatment report.

Where the student is stopped. Step 5. Gemini refused the supervisor role-play because the case includes passive thoughts of death. Step 3. The treatment comparison report failed on all four tries.

Under 18: do this instead. Present your case formulation to the instructor or to a classmate playing the supervisor, using the five questions in the assignment. For the treatment comparison, use the textbook chapter and one library source.

What the instructor adjusts. Provide the supervisor questions, or run the defense in class. Keep risk recognition and referral in the case, because it belongs to the competency.

HUM237 Artificial Intelligence and the Human Experience · Guest Curator Wall Label · Completed with an alternate step

Competency 5. “Explain the cultural implications associated with artificial intelligence in creative processes and artistic production, including art, music, film, and digital media.”

The assignment: Guest Curator Wall Label. You are guest curator for a campus gallery exhibition on AI and art, writing for the visiting public. You generate one piece, investigate whose labor and traditions stand behind it, decide how to credit it honestly, and answer a skeptical visitor on opening night.

The student produces: A print-ready exhibition panel with the image, a 150-word wall label and a credit line, and a live gallery conversation with a Gem playing a visiting painter.

Completed with an alternate step Gemini generated the image, discussed creative labor and authorship, drafted the label and ran the visitor conversation. It would not edit the image, and it does not offer music.

Where the student is stopped. Step 2. Gemini would not edit the image it had just made. Step 3. Music generation is not in the menu, and Gemini described a track in words.

Under 18: do this instead. Generate the night version as a new image with a full prompt (tested, it works). Go on without a track, say so on the panel, and discuss music from a published example of AI-generated music.

What the instructor adjusts. Accept a second generated image in place of an edit. Make the music track optional for students under 18.

CIS107 The Electronic Game Industry · Look and Sound Pitch Board · Completed with an alternate step

Competency 4. “Explain how visualizing and hearing the game can impact the game development process.”

The assignment: Look and Sound Pitch Board. You are a junior concept designer at a small indie studio. Before pre-production money is spent, the creative director and audio lead want to see and hear the first level of Lantern Run so they can choose a direction at Friday’s greenlight meeting.

The student produces: A pitch board with two concept images, a music track, a short video clip and your recommendation of dusk or night with its production consequences.

Completed with an alternate step Gemini wrote the direction, generated the concept image and built the pitch board. It would not edit the image, and it does not offer music or video.

Where the student is stopped. Step 3. Gemini would not edit the image. Step 4. Music generation is not in the menu. Step 5. Video generation is not offered to either account.

Under 18: do this instead. Generate the night version as a new image, write a cue sheet for the track with three reference tracks to listen to, and write an 8-shot storyboard with a sound note for each shot (all three tested, they work).

What the instructor adjusts. Accept the cue sheet and the storyboard on the pitch board. The storyboard applies to every student, because video is not offered to the 18 and older account either. Reword reflection question 3 so a student under 18 can answer it from the reference tracks.

IFS110 Critical Research for College Success · Source Brief for the Basic Needs Committee · Completed with an alternate step

Competency 2. “Apply advanced search strategies in a range of resources.”

Competency 3. “Evaluate information based on relevant criteria.”

The assignment: Source Brief for the Basic Needs Committee. You are a student research assistant for your college’s Basic Needs Committee, which is deciding whether to expand the campus food pantry. You write a one-page source brief for busy committee members, recommending only sources you found and checked yourself.

The student produces: A search log, a source verification log for every AI-cited source, a one-page source brief with five recommended sources, and reflection answers.

Completed with an alternate step Gemini tutored the search plan, pulled the source list out of the report, ran the committee conversation and built the template. Deep Research is not in the menu.

Where the student is stopped. Step 3. Deep Research is not in the menu. The same prompt in a standard chat failed five times with general errors, and the assignment’s shorter fallback prompt worked on the third try.

Under 18: do this instead. Ask for the overview in a standard chat with the fallback prompt, then run two more searches in the library databases so you still have at least eight sources to check.

What the instructor adjusts. Treat the library database search as the main research for every student. A student under 18 audits a shorter AI answer in place of a long report.

MUC191 Electronic Music I · Seventy-Two Seconds Under the Dome · Completed with an alternate step

Competency 8. “Apply basic principles of composition and arranging.”

Competency 9. “Produce projects that utilize principles of electronic music.”

The assignment: Seventy-Two Seconds Under the Dome. You are a freelance electronic composer hired by Saguaro Ridge Planetarium, a fictional small science center, to write a 72-second instrumental cue under spoken narration. Your audience is the program director, who is not a musician, and the families in the dome.

The student produces: An original 72-second cue as a WAV bounce and project file, a cue sheet, a listening log, a claim-check table, a revision memo, screenshots and reflection answers.

Completed with an alternate step The student composes the cue. Gemini tutored the plan, built the timeline, wrote the fact sheet, played the client and critiqued the arrangement. Music generation is used only as a listening exercise, and it is not in the menu.

Where the student is stopped. Step 2. Music generation is not in the menu. Gemini wrote out an arrangement in words.

Under 18: do this instead. Ask for a written description of the sketch, then listen to at least two published reference tracks and complete the same listening log on them (tested, the prompt works).
