Description

Interviews follow predictable patterns once you know what to look for. This assignment introduces the most common question types and asks you to practice answering one of the most universal: ‘Tell me about yourself.’

Learning Objectives

By completing this assignment you will be able to:

  • Distinguish between behavioral, situational, and competency-based interview questions
  • Apply the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure answers
  • Deliver a professional, specific answer to ‘Tell me about yourself’

Steps

  1. Watch: Interview Prep Series Part II: Interview Question Types (YouTube). Closed captions available.
  2. Choose a job you are interested in, use one from our discussions or find a new one.
  3. Write a response (3-5 sentences) to: ‘Tell me about yourself and why you are a good fit for this position.’ Write it as if you have graduated and are applying for that specific role.
  4. Submit your written response here.

Example

A weak answer starts with “I was born in...” or “I’m currently a student...” A strong answer is professional and targeted:

“I’m a motion graphics designer with a focus on broadcast and commercial work. I specialize in After Effects and Cinema 4D and I’ve spent two years building a portfolio of title sequences and product animations. I’m drawn to this role at [Company] because of your work on [specific project], my background in [skill] would let me contribute immediately.”
