Description
Freelancing is a legitimate career path in the creative industries, but it comes with real challenges that school does not always prepare you for. This assignment asks you to learn about those challenges and reflect on what they mean for your own plans.
Learning Objectives
By completing this assignment you will be able to:
- Understand the key financial, legal, and professional challenges of freelance work
- Evaluate pro-bono and internship opportunities critically
- Reflect on whether freelancing aligns with your personal career goals
Steps
- Read the information in this assignment on freelancing, pro-bono work, scope creep, and taxes.
- Browse at least 2 of the resource links at the bottom of this assignment.
- Write a 1-2 paragraph reflection here in Canvas: What would be the biggest challenge of freelancing for you personally? Does this change your post-graduation plans? If you are pursuing freelance, what can you do to set yourself up for success?
Example
What is Freelancing?
Freelancing is self-employment, you take projects from multiple clients rather than working for one employer. In creative industries many people freelance by choice or by necessity while building toward a full-time position.
Pro-Bono Work and Internships
You may encounter unpaid opportunities as a new graduate. Evaluate each carefully. A structured internship alongside an experienced professional can legitimately build your resume. But if they cannot explain what you will learn, or if the tasks are just free labor, walk away.
Scope Creep
Scope creep happens when a project grows beyond what was agreed upon, more revisions, new deliverables, without additional pay. A clear project brief and contract are your primary defenses.
Taxes
As a freelancer you pay your own taxes. Set aside 25-30% of every payment and pay quarterly estimates to the IRS. The IRS self-employed tax center explains the process.
