Description
Now that you have presented your own portfolio at midterm and received critique, you are better positioned to study other people’s work critically. Look at portfolios through the lens of an employer, not just a viewer.
Learning Objectives
- Critically evaluate professional portfolios using industry standards
- Identify specific techniques for presenting work effectively
- Reflect on how your own portfolio compares to professional examples
Discussion Prompt
Find a portfolio from a working professional in your field. Evaluate it as if you were a hiring manager.
Instructions
- Find a portfolio from a working professional, someone employed in the kind of role you want. Aim for mid-career level, not a celebrity designer.
- Post in Discord with a screenshot and URL. Write a 4-6 sentence analysis: What works? What would you change? How does the person describe their work? Would you hire them based on this portfolio alone?
- Comment on 4 classmates’ posts with a genuine reaction, agree, disagree, or add something they missed.
- Compile your post and 4 comments in Miro and export as JPG.
Example
Try looking at portfolios on Behance’s animation category, ArtStation, or on individual studio websites under the ‘team’ page. Mid-career professionals often have the most instructive portfolios.
