Description

The more you study real job postings throughout the semester, the better you understand what the industry wants. Your goal is not just to find a job, it is to identify a specific gap and commit to addressing it.

Learning Objectives

  • Practice targeted job searching in your specific industry area
  • Identify concrete skill gaps and create a plan to address them
  • Give useful, specific feedback to classmates about their job searches

Discussion Prompt

Find a job you genuinely want but might not be fully ready for yet. What would it take?

Instructions

  1. Search for a job posting in your field. A stretch job is encouraged, looking slightly beyond your current level shows you what to work toward.
  2. Post in Discord: the job title, company, and link or screenshot; one requirement you already meet; one requirement you do not meet yet; and a specific thing you could do this semester to close that gap.
  3. Comment on at least 3 classmates’ posts. You may even apply to jobs they posted if they fit your goals.
  4. Compile your post and comments in Miro and export as JPG.

Example

“Found a 3D Animator role at Blind (LA). They want Maya and V-Ray, and I only know Cinema 4D. My plan: I’m starting the Autodesk Maya Fundamentals course on LinkedIn Learning this weekend and spending at least 4 hours a week on it. By midterm I want one scene animated in Maya in my portfolio.”

How to Submit
