Description

A cover letter is your chance to show personality, explain why you want to work for a specific company, and connect your skills to their needs. Many designers skip this step, the ones who do it well stand out.

Learning Objectives

By completing this assignment you will be able to:

  • Write a professional cover letter in standard business format
  • Tailor a letter to a specific job posting and company
  • Connect your skills and experience to an employer’s specific needs

Steps

  1. Choose a real job posting, use one from Discussion 2 or 4, a classmate’s find, or one you discover. It is okay if you are not fully qualified yet; the practice is what matters.
  2. Review the Cover Letter Sample attached to this module for the correct format: date, company name and address, position name, 3 paragraphs, closing, your name.
  3. Paragraph 1: State the position and why you are interested in this specific company. Show that you researched them.
  4. Paragraph 2: Highlight 2-3 specific skills or experiences from your resume that directly relate to what the job posting asks for.
  5. Paragraph 3: Express enthusiasm, include your portfolio link, and invite them to contact you.
  6. For inspiration, watch this creative cover letter example: Designer’s video cover letter for Wieden+Kennedy.
