Description

Studying real job postings is one of the most useful things you can do this semester. They tell you exactly what skills employers want, which software they expect, and how to talk about your work. This is the first of several rotating job-posting discussions.

Learning Objectives

  • Search job boards relevant to your industry
  • Analyze a real job posting for skills and requirements
  • Identify gaps between the posting’s requirements and your current skillset

Discussion Prompt

Find one real job posting that genuinely interests you, then tell us what it would take to get it.

Instructions

  1. Search a job board for a position related to your degree: Indeed, AIGA Design Jobs, Creative Circle, Game Developer Jobs.
  2. Post in Discord: a screenshot or link to the job, the company and role title, one skill you already have, and one skill you need to develop, with a specific plan for how you will address it.
  3. Comment on at least 3 classmates’ posts with a specific, helpful observation, not just ‘great find!’
  4. Compile your post and 3 comments in Miro and export as JPG.

Example

“Found a Junior Motion Designer role at Struck Agency in Salt Lake City. They want After Effects and Cinema 4D (I know both) and Redshift for rendering (I don’t know Redshift yet, I’ll look up beginner tutorials this weekend). They also want someone who can concept, not just execute, so I want to start showing more process work in my portfolio.”

How to Submit

Upload your compiled Miro JPG here.
