Module 7 · Portfolio and Course Review · Design History checkpoint

Design History: Requirements and Build

Objectives

  1. H.3 Direct Gemini from a requirements document you write to build a presentation in the visual language of the period, and justify its typefaces, colors and layout. (Course Competency 4; Create)

This assignment measures Module Objective H.3, which supports Course Competency 4.

Overview

Write the requirements first, then direct Gemini to build the presentation from them. The grade is on your requirements and your design judgment, not on what Gemini generated.

Points: 10, Process Work

Estimated time: about 3 hours 30 minutes

Due: Sunday, May 2 at noon; post to Discord by Saturday, May 1 at noon

Instructions

The AI rule for this project. Design History is the one project in this course where AI may design. You use Gemini with your Maricopa account for research and to build the presentation, in Gemini Notebook or by describing the presentation to Gemini and having it build it in Gemini Canvas (vibe coding). You must confirm facts in library databases and reflect on what the AI got right and wrong. Historical artwork in the presentation is always real and sourced, never AI-generated.

  1. Write a requirements document (one page): audience, the categories and their order, the era’s typefaces, colors and layout conventions with a real example of each, and the sourced images to use.
  2. Build the presentation by giving Gemini your requirements: in Gemini Canvas (describe it and let Gemini build it), or as slides you assemble with Gemini Notebook output. Use only real, sourced historical artwork.
  3. Write a rationale of 100 to 150 words: which typefaces, colors and layout choices make it read as your era, and what you changed when Gemini got the period wrong.

Post a screenshot to #avc183-graphic-design-1 by noon the day before the due date and comment on three classmates. Submit the requirements document, the link to the presentation and the rationale.

AI use

Assigned AI use, project exception: Gemini builds the presentation from your requirements. Log every prompt that shaped the build. Record every use in your AI-use log. Gemini is used only with your Maricopa account.
