Module 5 · Your Own Brand

Your Brand Step 3: Refine the Top Four

Objectives

  1. 5.2 Generate at least 50 hand thumbnail concepts and refine the strongest four so each works in black alone. (Course Competency 4; Create)

This assignment measures Module Objective 5.2, which supports Course Competency 4.

Overview

Develop your four strongest concepts until each works in black alone. Color comes later; a mark that needs color is not finished.

Points: 10, Process Work

Estimated time: about 3 hours

Due: Thursday, April 8 at noon; post to Discord by Wednesday, April 7 at noon

Instructions

  1. Choose your top four sketches. Keep sketching on paper, then refine each on the computer in Illustrator.
  2. Make at least five versions of each, all in black only.
  3. Begin pairing type with the mark: the business name may be part of the mark or set beside it. Do not stretch or distort type.

Turning it in

  1. Post your work to #avc183-graphic-design-1 on Discord as PNG or JPG, with alt text, by noon the day before the due date.
  2. Comment on three classmates’ posts. Each comment names one design principle (or, in Module 4, one brand rule) and points to where it appears in the work.
  3. Screenshot your post and your three comments and compile them on one Miro board.
  4. Submit the Miro screenshot to Canvas by noon on the due date.
