Module 3 · Recipe: Grids and Hierarchy

Recipe Step 4: Image in Negative Space

Objectives

  1. 3.2 Use InDesign to set a recipe on a 12-column grid and to place an outside image at correct effective resolution and color mode. (Course Competency 3; Apply)

This assignment measures Module Objective 3.2, which supports Course Competency 3.

Overview

An outside image enters the layout. It sits in the negative space and supports the type; it does not cover the page.

Points: 10, Process Work

Estimated time: about 4 hours 30 minutes

Due: Sunday, February 28 at noon; post to Discord by Saturday, February 27 at noon

Instructions

  1. Find an image you have the right to use, from Wikimedia Commons, Library of Congress Free to Use or your own photograph, including an aerial photograph from a supervised STEAMworks drone session (see the option below). Record its source and license.
  2. Place it in InDesign (File, Place), do not paste. Check effective resolution in the Links panel (300 ppi for print) and note whether it is RGB or CMYK.
  3. Same page, grid and typeface. Scale, weight and case are available. The image goes in the negative space.
  4. Make two designs that look nothing like the other six.

You may take your image as an aerial photograph during a STEAMworks drone session. Students fly only under the direct supervision of the instructor, who serves as the FAA Part 107 remote pilot in command and can take control at any time. No flight passes over people, and the instructor handles any airspace authorization. Students under 18 follow the same supervised path. Book the session through the STEAMworks Center; STEAMworks supplies the drone.

If you are studying online or cannot attend a session, your own ground-level photograph or an image from the sources above is the equal path. The rubric is the same for every image source.

Turning it in

  1. Post your work to #avc183-graphic-design-1 on Discord as PNG or JPG, with alt text, by noon the day before the due date.
  2. Comment on three classmates’ posts. Each comment names one design principle (or, in Module 4, one brand rule) and points to where it appears in the work.
  3. Screenshot your post and your three comments and compile them on one Miro board.
  4. Submit the Miro screenshot and the image source and license to Canvas by noon on the due date.

AI use

No AI-generated images. Log “No AI used.” Record every use in your AI-use log. Gemini is used only with your Maricopa account.
