Module 3 · Recipe: Grids and Hierarchy

Recipe Step 1: Placement Only

Objectives

  1. 3.2 Use InDesign to set a recipe on a 12-column grid and to place an outside image at correct effective resolution and color mode. (Course Competency 3; Apply)
  2. 3.3 Apply one hierarchy variable at a time (leading, kerning, weight, case, scale) and explain how each changes what reads first. (Course Competency 2; Apply)

This assignment measures Module Objectives 3.2 and 3.3, which support Course Competencies 2 and 3.

Overview

One recipe, eight designs, one typeface at one size. Each step unlocks one more tool for hierarchy. Here you have placement alone.

Points: 10, Process Work

Estimated time: about 3 hours 45 minutes

Due: Thursday, February 18 at noon; post to Discord by Wednesday, February 17 at noon

Instructions

  1. Find a recipe with language you can play with typographically (“stir,” “creamy,” “upside down”). Edit it to 50 to 100 words with a title, ingredients and method. Gemini may help you edit the text; record that in your AI-use log.
  2. In InDesign, create an 8 by 8 inch document with 12 columns. Set the recipe in Helvetica 12 point (or another plain sans serif).
  3. Build hierarchy with placement, leading and kerning only. No bold, no italic, no size change. The title reads first. You may repeat words.
  4. Black type on white. Never stretch type.
  5. Make two different designs.

Turning it in

  1. Post your work to #avc183-graphic-design-1 on Discord as PNG or JPG, with alt text, by noon the day before the due date.
  2. Comment on three classmates’ posts. Each comment names one design principle (or, in Module 4, one brand rule) and points to where it appears in the work.
  3. Screenshot your post and your three comments and compile them on one Miro board.
  4. Submit the Miro screenshot to Canvas by noon on the due date.

AI use

Optional: Gemini may help edit the recipe text. Log what you asked and what you kept. The layouts are yours. Record every use in your AI-use log. Gemini is used only with your Maricopa account.
