Word/Meaning Part 3: Vector Designs

Objectives

  1. 2.3 Construct five vector designs that express meaning through placement, scale, and positive and negative space. (Course Competency 4; Create)

This assignment measures Module Objective 2.3, which supports Course Competency 4.

Overview

Move your strongest thumbnail for each word into vector type, where scale and placement can be controlled exactly.

Points: 10, Process Work

Estimated time: about 4 hours

Due: Thursday, February 11 at noon; post to Discord by Wednesday, February 10 at noon

Instructions

Do not submit this part until you have feedback on Part 2.

  1. Use Illustrator or InDesign, not Photoshop, so the type stays vector. Use Futura or another plain sans serif such as Helvetica Bold.
  2. Choose the strongest sketch for each word. Set each word on its own 8 by 8 inch page.
  3. Export each as PNG or JPG and place all five on one page.

Turning it in

  1. Post your work to #avc183-graphic-design-1 on Discord as PNG or JPG, with alt text, by noon the day before the due date.
  2. Comment on three classmates’ posts. Each comment names one design principle (or, in Module 4, one brand rule) and points to where it appears in the work.
  3. Screenshot your post and your three comments and compile them on one Miro board.
  4. Submit the Miro screenshot to Canvas by noon on the due date.
