Module 2 · Word/Meaning
Word/Meaning Part 2: Thumbnails
Objectives
- 2.2 Generate 50 descriptive verbs and at least 20 hand thumbnails for each of five chosen words within fixed constraints. (Course Competency 4; Create)
This assignment measures Module Objective 2.2, which supports Course Competency 4.
Overview
Thumbnails are where design decisions are made. Work out placement and scale by hand before the computer opens.
Instructions
Do not submit this part until you have feedback on Part 1.
- Create at least 20 thumbnail sketches of each word, 100 in all, on paper or a drawing tablet. Do not use computer type.
- Thumbnails are about 2 by 2 inches, several on a page. The final is square, so sketch square.
- Draw black lowercase sans serif letters on white. Change size and placement. Activate positive and negative space.
You may repeat a letter or use a capital if necessary, and let letters overlap or run off the page. You may not use color, stretch or distort type, add backgrounds or images, or break letterforms apart.
Turning it in
- Post your work to #avc183-graphic-design-1 on Discord as PNG or JPG, with alt text, by noon the day before the due date.
- Comment on three classmates’ posts. Each comment names one design principle (or, in Module 4, one brand rule) and points to where it appears in the work.
- Screenshot your post and your three comments and compile them on one Miro board.
- Submit the Miro screenshot and your thumbnail pages, assembled as one file to Canvas by noon on the due date.
Before Part 3, install Illustrator and InDesign from Adobe Creative Cloud for students and confirm both open.
