Module 2 · Word/Meaning
Word/Meaning Part 1: Fifty Verbs
Objectives
- 2.2 Generate 50 descriptive verbs and at least 20 hand thumbnails for each of five chosen words within fixed constraints. (Course Competency 4; Create)
This assignment measures Module Objective 2.2, which supports Course Competency 4.
Overview
The Word/Meaning project asks you to make five words look like what they mean, using only type, scale and placement. It begins with words, not pictures.
Instructions
- By hand, on paper, brainstorm 50 descriptive verbs. They may relate to movement or suggest an action. Do not choose nouns; you are not illustrating an object.
- Circle your five favorites, the words with the strongest typographic potential.
- Under each of the five, write one sentence on the visual idea you see for it.
- Photograph the page flat, full frame, in even light.
Turning it in
- Post your work to #avc183-graphic-design-1 on Discord as PNG or JPG, with alt text, by noon the day before the due date.
- Comment on three classmates’ posts. Each comment names one design principle (or, in Module 4, one brand rule) and points to where it appears in the work.
- Screenshot your post and your three comments and compile them on one Miro board.
- Submit the Miro screenshot to Canvas by noon on the due date.
AI use
No AI use. The handwritten list is the evidence. Log “No AI used.” Record every use in your AI-use log. Gemini is used only with your Maricopa account.
